Saying “Aloha” to a new year

On Friday, September 5, 2008, FVHS held its annual first dance, the Aloha Dance, in the school gym. Because breathalyzers that checked for any alcohol consumption in students were used, there was a long line of people extending from the cafeteria door to the school gates waiting to get into the dance.
Freshmen got in for free, as the Aloha Dance is often considered as a welcoming gesture to the freshmen. Everyone else had to pay five or seven dollars depending on his or her ID card.
ASB hired DJ N-effect for the night. Junior Sean Nguyen says, “I thought the dance was insane. The DJ was fantastic. There was a great choice of songs and remixes.”
A change in the customary Aloha Dance was that socks were required. No shoes were allowed because the gym’s floor had been recently redone because of last year’s damage. Nguyen says, “I understand why socks were needed for the dance, but it seemed ridiculous.”
Although most people arrived in their socks, ASB prepared a shoe check-in system for those who brought their shoes. The student was given a wristband with an assigned number that matched his or her shoes.
“I didn’t expect a high school dance to be this big. There were actually a lot of people and it was just fun to hang out with friends on a Friday night,” says a freshman.
