On Monday, September 15, Fountain Valley High School hosted its annual Back-to-School Night. At six o\’clock, many students\’ parents arrived at the bowl to listen to an introduction from Principal Herzfeld about the new school year. The Royal Regiment also hosted its annual baked goods sale in the cafeteria.

Just like students following the bells, parents experienced their sons\’ and daughters\’ daily schedule. The classes, of course, were all condensed to fit the two hour event. “I didn\’t know my kid had to walk so much during the day,” says a parent. ” His classes are on the complete opposite ends of the school. Maybe I won\’t go to his last period.”

Many parents felt like they were back in high school as they talked with old friends and tried to loiter around during passing period to avoid arriving to class too early. Says a parent, “High school really hasn\’t changed much since I was a teen. I was always getting into some kind of trouble, and attending Back-to-School Night tonight feels like I\’m back in school again.”

The event gave parents a chance to not only meet the teachers and advisors, but to also better understand the stress and pressure teenagers undergo throughout the school year. “I tell my kids to do things around the house and they are always complaining about how busy they are doing ‘school work.\’ I believe them now,” says a parent after the event.
