Field Hockey Update

This year has marked a new beginning for the Field Hockey program at FVHS. In the past the girls haven\’t had very successful seasons, and were lucky to win one game. However, as of now, the Lady Barons have won two games and lost two games.

Although this may seem insignificant compared to some of the other sports at our school with undefeated seasons, this is a big leap for Field Hockey. This may to be the year that Field Hockey makes it to CIF Playoffs and receive recognition for their hard work.

So far in official league play the Ladies have played four games, those being against Westminster HS, Huntington Beach HS, Newport Harbor HS, and Edison HS. Because there are so few field hockey teams in Orange County, the girls compete in a league comprised of different teams than those in the normal Sunset League.

Although records say they have lost two games, all of their games have been extremely close and could have gone either way. FV beat Westminster 2 to 1 after going into Sudden Death Overtime; lost to Huntington 2 to 0 after a hard fight; beat Newport, one of the best teams in the league 2 to 1; and then unfortunately lost to Edison 1 to 0. Despite those two upsets, Field Hockey is ready and prepared for another game.

Another positive of the season has been the wide variety of players who have scored goals on the team. Alyson, Taylor Merickel, Ashley Woody, Jackie Matthews, and I (Jennifer Schultz) have all scored goals. Goalie and co-captain Susie Toumanian (\’09), has also made countless saves and effectively helps lead the team.

The field hockey team agrees that their teamwork has significantly improved, and that it is a strong factor in their recent successes. The only team that they have left to play in this league round is Marina High School. Then they will start to play the same teams one more time. This coming round, the Field Hockey girls hope to further improve and defeat each team that comes their way.

“We can definitely have a successful season,” Toumanian says. “If we play the way we know how, no one can stop us.”
