National Honors Society (NHS) members volunteered for the annual Someone Cares Soup Kitchen in Costa Mesa this past Sunday. But before the actual event, the members had to prepare every day afterschool during the week before Thanksgiving break. The members gathered in the room of English teacher and club advisor, Mrs. Baron, to make decorations for the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen. The members colored pictures and designed festive Thanksgiving crafts.

On Sunday, members went to the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen and spent over an hour decorating the dining room with pictures and paper chains with inspirational quotes from NHS members.

“We tried to make [the dining room] look warm and welcoming for the less fortunate who would just want to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal,” says junior Jennifer Luong.

Kim, a representative from the kitchen, was very thankful. “I\’m so touched when I see younger people helping out in my soup kitchen. I am so grateful for everyone\’s help and encourage everyone to continue giving back to the community. It really makes a difference.”

After the project was over, all the NHS members felt accomplished, knowing that they helped at least a soup kitchen full of people who would have a brighter Thanksgiving.

“The Soup Kitchen is a very rewarding experience,” says Luong. “A simple gesture of kindness can reach such powerful lengths, and it’s a great sense of accomplishment to be able to make even one person’s Thanksgiving a little warmer.”
