Winter sports season is starting, and among these is the Lady Barons soccer team.

With eleven seniors graduating last year and two key returning underclassmen injured, the girls soccer team had to start from scratch this year. Injured during off-season, seniors Megan Garrity and Makenna Henry will not be able to play this season.

However, the players and the coaches maintain faith and are holding out for a strong season.

Head Coach Alyson Spencer says, “After graduating such a large number of girls last year, I was not sure what to expect this season. With the returning talent and the promising group of new players though, our expectations are still very high.”

Spencer says she is working the girls extra hard to get ready for the competitive Sunset League. Each of their daily practices start with sprints or a long distance run, are followed by intense drills that work the players\’ skills as well as their endurance, and end with another round of sprints. Despite the arduous workouts, the team can feel the practices pay off and that there change in the air, especially with all the new faces on the field.

Second year letterman Taylor Merickel (\’11) says, “We loved our seniors and we were sad to see them go. This team is all new but we connect really well with each other.”

This sincere enthusiasm is felt by each player. Despite their setbacks, the team is ready to have a successful season. The girls say that their goal for this year is to dominate the Sunset League and take home the championship. And even if they don\’t accomplish this, it is undeniable that these girls will grow as players and as individuals.
