Lady Barons Slaughter Aztecs 17-2
By Rachel McMillen, Sports editor
It seems like the Lady Barons Water Polo team is unstoppable this year. With a 12-1 record in the season so far, they dominated their first league opponent Esperanza 17-2 tonight in the Varsity Sunset League showcase at Newport Harbor High School.
Even more outstanding than the score was the way in which the Barons played though. With 10 different players scoring at least one goal each, the ladies played like a true team and the Aztecs had no clue what to do about it. For those who don’t know much about water polo, the game is only played with six field players and one goalie. Therefore, having 10 different girls score is a true testament of the vast range of ability present on this year’s team. The team’s speed also became apparent, scoring well over half of their goals on counter attack and winning all four of the sprints.
FV’s defense was also remarkable throughout the game. The Barons shut Esperanza down until the end of the fourth quarter, stealing the ball practically every time down the pool and allowing the Aztecs an embarrassingly small amount of time on offense.
Without a doubt, this was one of the best games the ladies have played this year. However, the true test of their ability will come in the next two weeks when they take on highly ranked opponents Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos.
