Jesse Dalton: I appreciate it. It\’s an honor because there are only about twenty students who are picked. It shows one\’s efforts and achievements throughout the year.
BB: What do you think qualifies a student to become a senior of the month?
JD: You don\’t need to be a straight “A” student but you have to try your best on all your classes, even if you don\’t get all the A\’s. You just need to be involved in school activities and community service. So, just stay involved in school and keep up the effort!
BB: What activities are you involved in?
JD: In school I have played soccer for four years, been on ASB for two years, and on Senate for two years. I\’m in five clubs—French Club, Badminton Club, Friends for Africa, Amnesty International and Club FM. I\’ve done community service at the beach, specifically beach clean up at the dog beach. I\’ve done Junior Lifeguards for eight years and I\’m trying to be a lifeguard next year.
BB: So you are our ASB president! How does it feel to be a leader for our school?
JD: I feel that I should and am, putting the best interest for school before anything else. It feels good to lead ASB and the school because I feel that I am really involved with the school.
BB: How has senior year been so far? Is it how you expected?
JD: It\’s not how I expected, but I think it\’s the best year of high school just because the classes are more fun and you get to know more people better. The events, like Homecoming, are even better as a senior. Additionally, being on the soccer team for four years is a great experience.
BB: What college do you plan on attending this following fall?
JD: I\’m trying to get into USC but if that doesn\’t work out then probably UCSB. I want to go to USC because I really like the school and a lot of my family has graduated from there. I\’d really like to continue the family legacy. UCSB is my second choice because it has a really good biology program and that\’s just a subject I really enjoy.
BB: What do you want to major in and why?
JD: I want to major in Biology. I want to be a Biology teacher because the subject is so cool, interesting to learn, and always fun. My experiences in Ms. Foley\’s AP Biology class have also convinced me to be a Biology teacher.
BB: Thanks, Jesse.
JD: No problem!
Jessica Hutton: I think it\’s really cool and an honor to be Senior of the Month because I\’ve worked hard throughout high school and it\’s really nice to be recognized
BB: What do you think qualifies a student to be a Senior of the Month?
JH: A student should be hard working, dedicated to our school, and very well rounded with extracurricular activities.
BB: So grades aren\’t everything?
JH: Well, I think it\’s great to be involved in other ways too, not just academics, but if someone is really into his or her studies then that\’s just as great. Extracurricular activities are always fun and I think everyone needs a balance between their studies and fun.
BB: What extracurricular activities are you involved in?
JH: I have been on ASB for two years, Friends for Africa, Peace Love Surf, and Club FM. I was also in Senate and open swim.
BB: What do you do for your clubs or activities?
JH: Well, for ASB I make murals. I\’ve been pretty busy during the school year so far. For my clubs, I just help as much as I can. My experiences in clubs make school all the more enjoyable.
BB: What position are you in ASB?
JH: I am on Publicity and this is my second year as Publicity Commissioner. We make sure we have enough supplies like paint, paper, and tape. We make posters and murals and publicize events that are happening around the school.
BB: So you really enjoy art. We have seen some impressive murals of yours out there during Edison Week and Homecoming! Where did you get your inspiration for art and drawing?
JH: Well, I just really like art because it\’s a good way to express myself.
BB: How has senior year been?
JH: Senior year has been awesome. I am definitely enjoying it and getting closer to all the great friends I\’ve made. One of the best parts is the freedom to get out at lunch (laughs). I am definitely looking forward to all the senior activities in second semester.
BB: What college do you plan on attending this coming fall?
JH: Well, first I\’m going to OCC, and then I\’m going to transfer to Cal State Long Beach or an art college.
BB: What do you want to major in and why?
JH: I want to major in art or English. I\’m not really sure yet, but I feel I want to major in these because art is my passion and English is my best subject. I want a career that involves at least one of those subjects I want to do something I really enjoy.
BB: Thank you, Jessica!
JH: You\’re welcome!
