This last Thursday, the Fountain Valley’s Freshman, JV, and Varsity teams all took wins over the Edison Chargers in the first dual of the season, hosted by Fountain Valley High School.

The varsity team came off to a strong start, with back-to-back pins from Awwad Yasin (‘09) and Anthony Duarte (’09), awarding the Barons with a quick 12 points. Duarte’s pin was the fastest of the dual at 21 seconds.

Edison retaliated with two decision victories in the 189 and 215 weight classes. This pushed the score to a close 12-6. However, heavyweight Barry Gee (‘10) was quick to tilt the score in the Baron’s favor by pinning his opponent in a short 55 seconds that diminished Edisons’ hopes of winning the dual.

The fate of the Chargers was sealed with two major first period pins, from Kyle Larkin (‘11) and Tyler Riggenburg (‘09), respectively. Barons who attended the dual will remember Riggenburg’s double leg takedown, with which he suspended his opponent in the air for several seconds.

The Barons are set to wrestle against Newport Harbor on January 14 at FVHS.

Note: Wrestling Captain Max Lam (’09) has been unable to wrestle due to a recent elbow injury, which is a significant loss to the team. The team wishes Max a speedy recovery and hopes to see him before the end of the season.
