Barons Polo Take on Mater Dei
By Kelly Torok, Staff writer
Last Monday, January 12th, the FVHS Girls Water Polo team took on Mater Dei High School in an intense match at the Monarch\’s Lyon Aquatics Center.
The game started and stayed intense. Although the Barons fought hard, the team ultimately lost 5-3. After a 0-0 first quarter and taking the lead in the second, then tying again in the third, the Barons ladies were unable to stay ahead
“We just had an off day,” said goalie and team captain Amanda Young (‘09) who made multiple saves during the game. The three goals the Barons scored were by the Amanda\’s sister, sophomore Marisa Young, freshman Kayla Roberts, and junior Danica Facella. During the game, FV showed strong tactics and techniques on defense, but not enough on offensive.
Head coach Jeff Russ says, “There was good defense for parts of the game. Offensively though, it was not good today. We did not shoot well, or enough, the entire game.”
The score going into the third quarter was tied at 2-2, but unfortunately the ladies were unable to maintain the momentum. The girls have another game on Wednesday, January 14 against Newport Harbor. Coach Russ hopes for a better outcome and says, “It is going to be a close game, but I think we can win it.”
