Last Tuesday March 24th, Fountain Valley\’s swim team traveled to Marina High School to take on the Vikings in their first Sunset League meet of the season.
The ladies completely annihilated Marina with a score of 110-60.
With junior Cynthia Fascella and sophomore Shelby Webber returned from Jr. Nationals, the Vikings didn\’t stand a chance. The girls\’ head coach Jeff Russ even took the risk of putting all his swimmers in different, off events for the day to truly test the depth of his team. And they did not let him down.
Fascella, usually a sprinter, took the 200 free in a blazing 1:55. Sophomore Stephanie Strom, a strong breaststroker, out-touched Marina\’s swimmer in the distance 500 freestyle race. Junior Alex Huynen, Fountain Valley\’s current record holder in the 100 fly, went out of her comfort zone to win the short 50 free sprint. The ladies\’ relays also did extremely well, especially for being none of their typical “A” relays, and took first in all three.
This is the Lady Baron\’s fourth straight win and another testament to what they have to come. This weekend they will participate in the CIF-SS relay meet, a meet that will truly test their depth and where they hope to place somewhere in the top three.
The most exciting meet of the season will be on Tuesday, March 31st where The Barons will take on the Edison Chargers. The ladies are currently ranked 3rd in CIF closely behind number one ranked Edison. With the Fascella twins, Huynen, Webber, and the rest of the varsity team though, there very well could be an upset in the works.
