On Saturday, April 26, NHS (National Honors Society) volunteered at the annual MS (multiple sclerosis) Walk at UCI from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m.
MS statistics show that someone in the United States is diagnosed with this disease every hour. The disease stops the flow of information from the brain to the rest of the body and can cause paralysis.
Through donations, the National MS Society has funded various programs and research departments, which have improved millions of lives. Their goal is to move closer to a world free of MS.
NHS members positioned themselves along the starting line and cheered as the walkers went by.
“It was pretty fun,” says sophomore Tiffany Chau, “and it was even better when the walkers high fived us.”
Once most of the walkers started their course, volunteers went to their booth and began handing out pizza and chicken strips to those who had already finished walking.
“It was a good learning experience and way to give back to the community,” says Chau, “I was even able to learn a little about the people with MS and what they have to go through every day.”
