Fountain Valley High School’s golf team faced their final opponent, Newport Harbor, on May 5. Though the game resulted in a loss for the Barons, it did not result in a defeat of their spirits.

“There was definitely room for improvement this season,” says Varsity captain Mitchel Char (’10), “however, I really look forward to a better season next year.”

The Barons ended the season with one win and eight losses, tying for last with Edison in league.

Though the Barons lost more matches than anticipated, the majority of them were within one or two points.

Fortunately, the team won’t be losing any seniors next year, and the returning players are ready for a strong season. Captains Mitchel Char and Loren Tengan (’10) are expected to lead the team to success next year. Both players averaged around a 38.9 this season.

Though Tengan and Char were clearly stars of the team, Justin Smith (’11) claimed his own spotlight as well. Smith averaged a 37.8 and won seven medals this season.

Smith, who was initially drawn into the game by his family, comments, “I was really proud of our team this year. The greatest part is that we all worked together and helped each other out. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Captain Loren Tengan adds, “We owe a lot to our coach as well. He has been very supportive throughout the season and we are truly lucky to have him.”

Coach Wilton, who has coached at FVHS for six years, is in turn grateful for his team.

“The guys this year really stepped up and are the strongest team I have seen since I have been coaching,” says Wilton.

While this season ended in defeat, there’s much hope for next season and with such team spirit, there’s no doubt the players will continue to do their best.
