The Huntington Beach Union High School District conducted a routine board meeting on Tuesday, September 15. It was a usual meeting with one exception – a very large and concerned crowd.
The crowd was composed of members of ASB, FVHS staff and at least a dozen concerned residents. The meeting consisted of its standard agenda along with a more controversial issue. Some members of the communities surrounding FVHS aren’t happy with particular after-school activities.
Residents around FVHS voiced their concerns over the loud and at often times, bright atmosphere FVHS tends to provide on a nearly day-to-day basis. During the “Public Communication to the Board,” multiple Fountain Valley residents ascended to the podium to address the issue and its potential consequences.
As one community member stated, “We have children, we have grandchildren, we can’t live there!”
Although our drum line, band, and sports were blamed for loud noises, and rowdy crowds, a large portion of the community’s arguments were against third parties. The district allows out-of-school programs such as football leagues and soccer teams to practice on campus facilities. This brought up another issue of the usage of district property by third parties.
“The Junior [All] American Football has taken over the school,” as well as, “The sports teams are relatively all right, but the field is over used by non-school related activities,” stated a concerned attendee.
A representative from the football organization responded with, “We want to coexist.”
