On October 9th Mrs. Zeigler\’s Sophomore Honor\’s English Class went on an expedition to the Getty Villa Museum.
I was one of the students among the bunch; in the morning, our class met up at exactly 7:45 AM and we were ready to start off our day.
The bus ride was quite long, but I kept myself busy by talking to friends during the trip. I looked around and saw the other students playing on their DSs and listening to iPods.
Eventually, we arrived at the museum near Malibu Beach. After some instructions and facts, we walked into the museum and found ourselves in the city of Herculaneum. Well, actually it was just a prototype, but it was believable!
To make things easier for the tour guides, our classes split up into two groups of sixteen. Our tour guide took us to see a statue of Hercules, an ancient Thracian pot, a mummy, and a prized trophy from Athena.
The tour guide wasn\’t the only speaker; the whole class interacted by asking questions and coming up with their own interpretations of the ancient art pieces.
After our tour, we had lunch and we enjoyed some free time. My friends and I took some really funny (and quite embarrassing actually) pictures of ourselves posing like the statues.
Ultimately, I felt the trip was a valuable experience and I learned a lot about Greek and Roman mythology. So freshmen, you better hope your class attends the Getty Villa field trip next year and remember to strike a pose when you\’re there!
