The University of California announced that they would raise tuition fees starting next fall. How do you feel about this ?

ThuyThuy (‘10): “When I first heard about the news, I thought that we\’re paying more tuition for something that we\’re getting less of. If the tuition is increased, it would be less affordable to lower and middle classes. Underrepresented people will not be able to afford it. They still have to think of another alternative. People will have to get a job or a second job. One person\’s voice is strong, but if we stand up to this together, we can change their minds.”

David VuDavid Vu (‘11): “Well obviously, I am pissed because, as a junior getting ready to prepare for college, [I have] the UCs as some of the main schools that I want to go to. Now, on top of having to worry about getting in, at the same time, I have to worry about paying for it. I know I could take loans, but I will probably spend another ten years of my life trying to pay off the loans. [Also] consider the possibility that I might not get a good job.”

YarntonSr. Yarnton: “The kids are voicing their opinions, which are very important. There is a cutback in education and not a lot of increases. I\’m hoping that this will bring a greater awareness to how the money is divided and maybe put more importance on education and somehow change way the funds are made available. About public education, obviously we have to pay for it somehow, but right now, in these financial times, there should be a better balance in raising the fees.”

Sean NguyenSean Nguyen (‘10): “It\’s pretty bad that they\’re raising the tuition. At the same time, think of it from their point of view. They\’re not getting enough funding from the state government. They have to get money somehow, and we cannot expect them to sacrifice themselves on our behalf.”

catherineCatherine Bui (‘12): “I think people should stop making such a big deal about the increased tuition. They\’re basically getting an ideal education at the UC, and UC is top ranked in the nation. The education that they\’re getting is pretty much worth that 32% increase. The alternative to this would be cutting back classes, and I think I would rather have to pay more money than to get my classes cut.”

Jason FerallJason Ferall(‘10): “It doesn\’t make any sense because the government spends so much on other things that are not as important, they could take this money to pay for UC instead. People need the education for life later on, but now they\’re making it more and more difficult.”

Henry TrinhHenry Trinh (‘10): “Concerning the UC raising tuition, I believe that education should be free for all students. Instead of focusing on healthcare, we should care about this.” (stylebreak)

David Nguyen (‘10): “The UC raising tuition is outrageous, but how people are overreacting to it is ridiculous. They\’re not getting enough funding; they know that if they raised tuitions, this will happen. I seriously do not think that they did not debate the consequences before doing it. Instead of protesting and wasting public space, people should just find another job.”

Thang Nguyen (‘10): “It\’s pretty insane that the UC are actually raising tuition, why the law of economics says that you should actually lower the costs to get people to spend more. Tuitions has already been high for these past several years just as prices are in general, and this new increase of 32%, that\’s like economic suicide.”
