On Saturday, November 6th, The National Honors Society (NHS) prepared to go out to Huntington Beach early in the wet and chilly morning to help out in the annual Surf City Event.
NHS members were put right to work stacking sand bags on the borders of the tent in order to prevent rain from leaking in and soaking inside. After rushing sand bags back and forth throughout the main tent, they were led to their main job: food bag preparation.
NHS members teamed up with other volunteers to prepare thousands of food bags. They formed several assembly lines in order to put fruits, cookies, and all types of bars into bags as quickly and efficiently as possible. They also held small races to keep up the energy and to provide an incentive for efficiency.
“It didn\’t seem that hard at first,” says sophomore Henry Nguyen. “But, after our first break, the pace was faster and tiring. It was fun, though, and we got to eat some of the snacks during the break.”
Their job went on for four hours before NHS members\’ shifts ended, and they headed home.
“Today\’s event was colder than last year, so everyone was frozen up in their areas,” says senior Eunice Kim, “but, it was definitely fun. Since I\’m graduating this year, I want to volunteer for a head position because this is a great experience.”
