On the morning of Saturday, June 5, students from the HBUHSD\’s physics classes went to Westminster High School to participate in the annual boat competition. Constructed from only wood, glue, and paper and waterproofed with acrylic paint, the one- and two-person boats braved the lengths of the pool, leaving some participants dry with success and others drenched with failure.
Senior Thomas Nguyen says, “It was fun until the second time [that we sank].”
Boats came in all shapes and sizes, from speedboat-like designs to large boxes that resembled coffins, and names ranged from the S.S. Fail to the S.S. Confidence and everything in between.
Boat judge Albert Lai (\’10) comments, “There was a high failure rate.”
After the competition, some students took their boats home while others, mostly unsuccessful participants who relished this moment, destroyed their creations with baseball bats.
