When Edison High School first came to the Huntington Beach School District in 1969, transfer students poured in from FVHS and HBHS. Transfer students at both schools were early-on informed if they were to transfer to Edison in a few weeks. While Huntington kept the soon-to-be transfer students in the football program until they officially left, Fountain Valley dropped the transfers on the football team from the program roster, believing that they were weren\’t going to be playing as Barons anytime in the future. According to first football Edison coach, Bill Vain, this was a plot Fountain Valley had developed from the very beginning to defeat the EDH football team. So the Chargers pushed their limits to challenge the Barons. In the very first year, the unseasoned varsity football players from Edison beat the CIF-bound Barons in a devastating 21-20 score, a Baron loss. And so the Bell Game originated from the rivalry, a game to prove which team has got it all.

In the first six years of the rivalry (FV lost four games, won once, and tied once) the annual football game that drew crowds in the thousands offered a prize of pride and the feeling of being undefeated. However, in 1975, Dave Hagen, FVHS activities coordinator and Ben Garrett of Edison High decided to find a prize to initiate more hype and enthusiasm for the Bell Game. The first winning prize was proposed to be an animal, but that was shot down quickly because of complications and responsibility. The next idea was  a World War II Howitzer cannon that actually fired, but principals from both high schools shot down the idea in fear that the prize would be used in violent or negative ways and situations. So instead, the reward was a bell tucked away in the Mission Viejo antique shop for sale at an alleged $600. And so, since 1975, the bell has been brought to the game by the previous year\’s winning team, and brought back by the present year\’s winning varsity team. (You can see the bell in the winning team\’s Administration Office each year.) The list of the 42 years of games can be viewed on both schools\’ websites. (Through those four decades, there has been a tie only once, on October 4, 1974, with a stunning score of 0-0.)

This year, Barons have proved to push their limits and give their all. Good luck out there Barons, and bring back our Bell!

Girls Volleyball: against Edison 10/21- loss 0-3

The varsity team played strong and hard in the first half of the game and pushed through to half-time at 1-0, Barons in the lead. Unfortunately, in the second half of the game, Edison scored once, making it a tie at 1-1. The teams went into 10 minutes of overtime with seven players on seven players. Through the intense overtime session, both teams came close, but neither scored, finalizing the score to 1-1. Unfortunately, JV lost, the score at 0-3.

And in the same week, the Lady Barons played the Westminster Lions. Barons was scored on immediately in the first half, but gave it back in less than 10 minutes. The score at half-time was 1-1. In the second half, the Lions scored again, and the results ended at a Fountain Valley loss of 1-2. JV played afterwards and they fought hard and scored a victory over Westminster. The winning prize was a shut-out score of 3-0.

The Westminster game is the third to last game of the Fountain Valley Field Hockey season, and then if our Barons can make it, the LAFHA playoffs. Keep playing hard and end the season strong ladies!

Although they put up a good fight, they unfortunately lost 2 to 16.

They have hopes for the rest of the season, as they are training and conditioning with the new varsity Coach Patel and the new tennis methods he is bringing to the table this season. Coach Patel is encouraging to the girls to push themselves harder than ever before to improve the team as a whole.

On March 29, Boy\’s Varsity Volleyball took on the visiting Edison Chargers. It was a close match.

Typical of any Baron versus Charger game, the mood was tense. The game saw the highest spectator attendance of the season; the shouting from fans of both sides echoed around our gym.

At the beginning of the first game, the Barons and Chargers exchanged leads. Eventually however, Edison had too many blocks which cemented their victory.

During the course of the second game, Fountain Valley pushed back. Bret Woodley (\’11) led the Barons with two huge kills, giving our team momentum. Johnny Quan (\’11) played with intense zeal, leading the team\’s spirit and charisma. Each player performed consistently in blocking and attacking. As a result, the Barons won their second game, 25 to18.

Unfortunately, over the next two games, the Barons fell short and lost momentum too early in the match. Giving up too many scoring opportunities to the Chargers, Fountain Valley was unable to make up for the deficit.

Defeat came as the Chargers won three of the four games over the course of the match.

Conclusively, it was small mistakes throughout the course of the game that led to the Baron\’s defeat. Numerous blocks that ricocheted out of bounds only served to give points to the Chargers.

On May 4th, boys volleyball played their last home game against Edison.

Edison Week has arrived, and FVHS has been transformed into a colorful blend of paper and ink. Bright words and pictures attack the eyes as students go from between classes, observing the decorated walls.

For months, from mid-summer up to Edison Week, the Fountain Valley ASB and Senate have been working tirelessly in preparation for this event, from making dance routines to drawing dazzling posters. However, this is old news. Many students have seen ASB and Senate at their weekly meetings and poster and prop “parties.” This is the inside scoop on the transformation of the school.

On Monday night, the ASB and Senate members put up nearly 1000 posters. Starting right after school, the posters were taken out and splayed all across the school. As a single unit, the members opened, placed, and taped the posters along the inside of the school.

Over the course of the week, more and more posters and decorations will be placed around the school, from 10 foot murals to puffy bells. Each night, the ASB and Senate members remain at school, working until 9:00 p.m. or later.
