The lady barons soccer girls have been practicing hard every day since the very first week of school. Although in the beginning of school, the girls were training hard by doing offseason fitness workouts after school, the girls are now working hard with having tryouts to decide which girls will make each of the teams.

“We are looking forward to a victory this year and for a rank in the CIF league,” commented Scott Goldman, the new varsity team coach. “This will be our year and my assistants and I will be working out hardest to make sure the girls are in shape before the season begins.”

Even though, the girls have just received their new coach, they could already feel the improvement in themselves to push harder. With more than 10 of the girls injured, the coaches are emphasizing the importance of taking care of pain and soreness from the long and hard workouts after school.

This year, the coaches were very pleased to find that many freshmen have decided to try out for the team this year. Over 30 freshmen came out to the field on Monday to take an opportunity to join the team this year. “If I find a freshman player that has the ability to play on the varsity team, I will move them onto the team immediately,” emphasized Coach Goldman.

This Wednesday, the teams will be decided and positions will be filled. Although more than 60 girls have tried out for all of the teams, only 20 are expected to be on each of the three teams. To all of the girls that have tried out, good luck!

Girls soccer is a winter season sport, and the first team game/scrimmage will be held on November 22, 2011 against Corona Del Mar High School for all levels.

By Camille Linares-Reed, sports editor

All of our winter sports closed with successful seasons, many of which made it to CIF.

Boys’ Soccer ended their season with a league score of 4 wins, 6 losses, and 0 ties. The first round CIF game played against Bell Gardens High School ended in a FVHS victory (2-1), with goals made by seniors Christian Rodriguez and Steven Ryan. They advanced to prelims where they played Ventura High School and lost (2-3). This game was the end to the boys’ memorable season.

Girls’ Soccer was not as fortunate as the boys’ season. The team didn’t get a chance to experience CIF this year. They ended their league season with 1 win, 7 losses, and 2 ties.

Senior Courtney Garrity and Captain of Girl’s Soccer expressed, “We played every second with passion and determination. More importantly, we played for each other as a team. I consider that a win everyday, and I’m proud of my team.”

Boys’ Basketball, usually not known for being the best in the league, pulled an excitingly unexpected league score of 4 wins, 6 losses, and 0 ties. The boys won the first round CIF game against California High school (51-30) with leading scorers being junior, Sean Myers (15 points), senior Zach Matar (8 points), and sophomore Taner Trounce (8 points). The following game played didn’t end quite as well. The boys battled Downey High and lost (33-44). This season will go down in FVHS history for being the only basketball season to ever reach the 2nd round of CIF playoffs.

Team Manager Danny Huynh comments, “The Boys ended up ranking 4th in league which was suprising. They played their hardest in CIF, and I’m proud. They leave this season with great memories, friendships, and a heightened league reputation.”

Girl’s Basketball ended their league season with 1 win (against Newport Harbor), 10 losses, and 0 ties. The girls got a chance at the first round game of CIF and played Rancho Cucamonga High School. The game ended with a loss of (74-27).

Girls’ Waterpolo ended their season with a league standing of 2 wins, 3 losses, and 0 ties. The girls won their CIF wildcard game against Esperanza (9-4) with four goals shot by senior, Marisa Young. The girls advanced to the first round but lost to Corona del Mar (6-12). This was the second consecutive year that the FVHS girls’ water polo team has been to CIF. Keep it up next year, girls!

FVHS Wrestling has always been infamous for its unstoppable wrestlers and stunning records. This year, five boys advanced to CIF, seniors Courtland Drummond and Vincent tran, juniors Dean O’Bourke and Edgar De La Torre, and sophomore Steele Escobedo. Three of the boys even went beyond CIF and made it to Masters. The talented few were Vincent Tran, Dean O’Bourke, and Steele Escobedo.

Vincent Tran comments on his last season, “I felt like we worked really hard this year. We’d push each other in practices harder than I’ve ever remembered. You have to constantly stay focused before your match. Most of the sport is mental, and we’ve really conquered that.”

All winter sports ended impressive 2010-2011 seasons. Best of luck to wrestlers Vincent, Dean, and Steele at the Masters, which is taking place Friday Jan. 25th and Saturday Jan 26th in Temecula Valley. An update will be posted by Sunday, Jan 27th.

For now our Barons Boys\’ soccer team is holding up one win and one loss. Regardless of this uncertainty, they continue to strive to find victory. When asked about the team\’s ultimate goal, Shearer further states, “Our goal was to make it to CIFs and show what the Barons have,” says Ethan Morrow (\’12), captain of the varsity team.

The week of January 28th was one for the Boys to remember. Games against Edison High School , Marina High School , Huntington Beach High School all ended up in a victory for our Mighty Barons. “I think our team surprised a lot of people,” says Wade Sias (\’12), forward player, “we believe we can get into playoffs and go deeper than it has in a few years.”

Edison High School was one game that the boys were anticipated for as Edison High School was undefeated in their season so far. Although it did not end up in the Barons favor with a loss of 4-0, that game did not effect the boys as they went to take on Marina High School , which they lost to earlier in season, and against Huntington Beach High School .

Against Marina High School and Huntington Beach High School , our mighty Barons defeated the two teams with two goals made each game. Earlier in January, Marina beat the Barons with a lucky goal, “we wanted to go onto the field and play like the other game never happened,” explains Sias.

“We had a pretty young team,” Morrow states, “but we are all talented and dedicated to the sport.” “We had a lot of first years getting a lot of minutes,” Sias says, “but we all worked towards a great season, and what a great season it was.”

On Tuesday, November 30th, Boys\’ Varsity won against Calvary Chapel High School, their first game of the season. It was a great start for our Baron soccer team. The ball was rarely against our side. The strong fight put up by our boys ended the game in a 2-0 victory. “Our offense was dominating the field and the ball didn\’t even pass our defense,” says varsity player, Eric Shearer (\’12), “it was just a successful game that helped boast our confidence and Baron Pride.”

The boys practice every day after school from running miles to scrimmaging with all the levels for 3 hours and more a day. “The season has been shaping really well and we want to go for a long winning streak,” Shearer says.

Friday December 3rd was a different story. During 2nd game of the season, Our boys challenged the formidable Trabuco Hills. Our mighty Barons were holding up the Mustangs, winning by 1-0 at half time. Unfortunately, 2 goals were suddenly put in by Trabuco Hills. “Neither goal was put into our net, it was luck that they got pass our 10 players and the ball just rolled in,” explains Shearer.

For now our Barons Boys\’ soccer team is holding up one win and one loss. Regardless of this uncertainty, they continue to strive to find victory. When asked about the team\’s ultimate goal, Shearer further states, “Our goal is to make it to CIFs and show what the Barons have.”

As the rain ended, so did the soccer season. Sadly, the ending wasn’t what FVHS had expected for their infamous soccer teams.

The boys ended their season with the record of 8 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie overall. The girls ended their season with 9 wins, 9 losses, and 2 ties.

The boys and girls started off their season determined to go to CIF playoffs. While others were probably curled up on the couch drinking hot coco, the boys and girls soccer teams were outside training and practicing vigorously in order to reach that goal.

Coach Spencer was extremely proud of the girls\’ year and acknowledged their hard work. “We had a good group of girls this year. They stayed determined and didn\’t back down. The defense and keeper especially did a great job.”

Some boys who played exceptionally well were Senior Captain Josh Garcia, Senior Captain Rafael Contreas-Geck, and Freshman Derek Huynen. On the other spectrum, some girls who performed extremely well were Senior Captain Makenna Henry, Senior Jessica Parker, Freshman Madison Gomez, and Freshman Dakota Greggs.

These Barons kept their head up high and didn\’t back down, playing the true role of a good sport. This year’s season was exciting, kept the spectators on their feet, and left them with vivid memories of amazing plays, regardless of the score or season outcome.

As time flies, the exciting time of year once again sprouts where FVHS teams are going to put their skills and tactics into test.

The girls and boys soccer team just started the complicated and hectic battle for the title of Sunset League Champions. They have been practicing vigilantly, having one common goal: CIF.

Overall the boys won 5 games and lost in 7 games during pre season and the girls have been a winning streak of winning 7 games so far.

Junior Courtney Garrity takes control of the ball.

On Jan 6th, the boy\’s night ended with a loss against Esperanza, 0-4. But the boys didn\’t give up. They keep focusing on their ultimate goal to stay strong.

On Jan 8th, The Boys lost again against Newport, 0-1. Currently their Sunset League record is 0-2.

Some eye-catching plays were made by Seniors Koushi Taniguchi and Team Captain Josh Garcia.

“They have been working hard. Every game is a new challenge and they put their whole mind in to the games and I believe they are getting better,” said a spectator from the audience.

On Jan 7th, the girls lost for the first time against Newport Harbor 0-1. Keeping the record 0-1 in Sunset League and #1 overall.

This time Coach Alyson commented that the two girls who played exceptionally well were Senior and Team Captain Makenna Henry and Freshman Madison Gomez.

“We have been getting better in each game. We are working hard and trying to reach our goal of finishing in the top half of sunset league,” comments coach Alyson.

Both teams have been working well and keeping their heads up high. Not just wishing for better games, but proving it too.

Come see them in the boy\’s next home game against Los Alamitos on Jan 13th, and the girl\’s next game against Los Alamitos on Jan 12th.

On December 9, 2009 the lady Barons soccer team played an exciting game against Long Beach Millikan.. The girls so far have a standing of, 2 wins to one loss. Tonight the game ended with 2-0 win.
Aside with their daily training, the girls have been playing exceptionally well in their last few games.

Among them were sophomore, Jillian Vasquez and senior, Jessica Parker, who made outstanding goals.

“This is a good start and I feel that we have enough confidence and motivation to come out with a great season,” says Vasquez.

These girls are going to do what it takes to get to the CIF playoffs, so watch out sunset league, get ready to see some domination.

On the other hand, we have the boys who sadly lost 0-3 against Santa Ana yesterday, December 9th. Their season standing remains one win to 2 losses currently.

The boys tried their hardest in the game, only to be disappointed with a very close loss. Some boys played exceptionally well like captain, Josh Garcia(\’10) and freshmen, Derek Huynen.

“The team played great…. Its just the beginning of the season and we have more games to come,” says freshmen, Oscar Fernandez.

The boys sure haven\’t lost any hope. With time, training, and hard work, they will be sure to impress sunset league, and make Fountain Valley proud.

Both girls and boys have a goal to get to the CIF playoffs. With many games ahead we hope they will reach their goal and have a successful season this year.

Friday December 4th an unforgettable game. The Barons ended with a loss of 2-5. However, these Barons won\’t let it affect them.

“We can definitely learn from this game and use the plays they used to improve ourselves,” says junior, Nolan Moder.

Some plays were let on by the referee in favor of the Barons, but it turns out he changed his call for a direct kick on the 18 for the Trabuco Hills team.

Josh Garcia and Jake Jerulle took the beautiful shots into the goal’s net but that wasn\’t enough for the win.

The boys can only hope for a satisfying win at their next game to bounce back from the loss of this game and Monday\’s game against Costa Mesa ending at a loss of 0-1.

“Varsity played well, but we ended up unlucky at the end,” says Moder.

Although they are still in pre-season, every game is important in order to reach their goal: CIF.

With many games to come, there is no doubt that these mighty Barons can bring up their game.
