“We are looking forward to a victory this year and for a rank in the CIF league,” commented Scott Goldman, the new varsity team coach. “This will be our year and my assistants and I will be working out hardest to make sure the girls are in shape before the season begins.”

Even though, the girls have just received their new coach, they could already feel the improvement in themselves to push harder. With more than 10 of the girls injured, the coaches are emphasizing the importance of taking care of pain and soreness from the long and hard workouts after school.

This year, the coaches were very pleased to find that many freshmen have decided to try out for the team this year. Over 30 freshmen came out to the field on Monday to take an opportunity to join the team this year. “If I find a freshman player that has the ability to play on the varsity team, I will move them onto the team immediately,” emphasized Coach Goldman.

This Wednesday, the teams will be decided and positions will be filled. Although more than 60 girls have tried out for all of the teams, only 20 are expected to be on each of the three teams. To all of the girls that have tried out, good luck!

Girls soccer is a winter season sport, and the first team game/scrimmage will be held on November 22, 2011 against Corona Del Mar High School for all levels.

The varsity team played strong and hard in the first half of the game and pushed through to half-time at 1-0, Barons in the lead. Unfortunately, in the second half of the game, Edison scored once, making it a tie at 1-1. The teams went into 10 minutes of overtime with seven players on seven players. Through the intense overtime session, both teams came close, but neither scored, finalizing the score to 1-1. Unfortunately, JV lost, the score at 0-3.

And in the same week, the Lady Barons played the Westminster Lions. Barons was scored on immediately in the first half, but gave it back in less than 10 minutes. The score at half-time was 1-1. In the second half, the Lions scored again, and the results ended at a Fountain Valley loss of 1-2. JV played afterwards and they fought hard and scored a victory over Westminster. The winning prize was a shut-out score of 3-0.

The Westminster game is the third to last game of the Fountain Valley Field Hockey season, and then if our Barons can make it, the LAFHA playoffs. Keep playing hard and end the season strong ladies!

The next day, Tuesday the 11th, the lady Barons played another home game against the Huntington Beach Oilers. Varsity player Kathy Vu (\’12) was mildly injured, but definitely needed stitches. Unfortunately both teams lost, varsity 0-3 and jv 0-2.

Thursday, October 13, the team played the Newport Harbor Sailors. Within the first half of the varsity game, the Barons scored once. However, after half-time, Newport Harbor also scored once, finalizing the tie to 1-1 by the end of the game. The match went on into ten minutes of overtime and the Sailors unfortunately scored once more. The final score went down to a varsity defeat, the score at 1-2.

Jv played hard the first half, but let in three goals. They persisted and no goals went in during the second half of the match. The jv ended up in defeat being 0-3.

The Sunset League was proud to announce the invitation of our Boy’s Varsity Baseball Team to CIF Playoffs on May 17th, 2011.

Varsity Baseball has had a phenomenal season, holding a record of 15 wins and 11 losses. The Baron’s first CIF match will be today against Saint John Bosco High School, a formidable opponent with a record of 19-0-8.

FVHS students and parents are encouraged to attend and support our hard-working team. The match began at 3:00 pm and is currently in session at St. John Bosco High School.

Yesterday, April 28, the Barons track and field teams traveled to Goldenwest College to compete against Marina, their final meet of the season before league finals.

By the end of the day, our Barons would make a remarkable finish. Boy\’s Varsity crushed Marina. The Baron\’s final league meet was the last step in their campaign for perfection, giving them a record of 5-0.

“This is the best way to end off my senior year with an undefeated season and a spot in CIFs,” says Hassan Ilyas (\’11)

The Boy\’s and Girl\’s Frosh/Soph team also ended victorious, completely dominating Marina, whose efforts were simply marginalized by the Barons unrelenting stride. They too finished with a perfect record of 5-0.

Girl\’s Varsity, as hard as they fought, were unable to dislodge Marina, giving them their first loss of the season. Regardless of a now 4-1 record in league, the Barons still have a chance to compete and win in league championships next week.

Proud of their accomplishments thus far, Coach Bivens had optimistic words for the team. “It will be great if the girls win next week so we can bring it all together,” spoke Bivens.

“We all practiced hard and the energy and effort we put into the meets helped us gain more strength to do better which is our advantage over the other high schools,” states Ilyas.

With the exception of Girl\’s Varsity, the Barons have swept all other high schools which include Edison, Los Alamitos, Marina, Huntington Beach, and Newport Harbor, putting the Barons on top as they continue to League and CIF finals toward the end of their season.

Surely, the Barons will continue to perform excellently, raising the bar that they have continued to raise every season.

On March 29, Boy\’s Varsity Volleyball took on the visiting Edison Chargers. It was a close match.

Typical of any Baron versus Charger game, the mood was tense. The game saw the highest spectator attendance of the season; the shouting from fans of both sides echoed around our gym.

At the beginning of the first game, the Barons and Chargers exchanged leads. Eventually however, Edison had too many blocks which cemented their victory.

During the course of the second game, Fountain Valley pushed back. Bret Woodley (\’11) led the Barons with two huge kills, giving our team momentum. Johnny Quan (\’11) played with intense zeal, leading the team\’s spirit and charisma. Each player performed consistently in blocking and attacking. As a result, the Barons won their second game, 25 to18.

Unfortunately, over the next two games, the Barons fell short and lost momentum too early in the match. Giving up too many scoring opportunities to the Chargers, Fountain Valley was unable to make up for the deficit.

Defeat came as the Chargers won three of the four games over the course of the match.

Conclusively, it was small mistakes throughout the course of the game that led to the Baron\’s defeat. Numerous blocks that ricocheted out of bounds only served to give points to the Chargers.

On Tuesday, November 30^th, Boys\’ Varsity won against Calvary Chapel High School, their first game of the season. It was a great start for our Baron soccer team. The ball was rarely against our side. The strong fight put up by our boys ended the game in a 2-0 victory. “Our offense was dominating the field and the ball didn\’t even pass our defense,” says varsity player, Eric Shearer (\’12), “it was just a successful game that helped boast our confidence and Baron Pride.”

The boys practice every day after school from running miles to scrimmaging with all the levels for 3 hours and more a day. “The season has been shaping really well and we want to go for a long winning streak,” Shearer says.

Friday December 3^rd was a different story. During 2^nd game of the season, Our boys challenged the formidable Trabuco Hills. Our mighty Barons were holding up the Mustangs, winning by 1-0 at half time. Unfortunately, 2 goals were suddenly put in by Trabuco Hills. “Neither goal was put into our net, it was luck that they got pass our 10 players and the ball just rolled in,” explains Shearer.

For now our Barons Boys\’ soccer team is holding up one win and one loss. Regardless of this uncertainty, they continue to strive to find victory. When asked about the team\’s ultimate goal, Shearer further states, “Our goal is to make it to CIFs and show what the Barons have.”
