On May 4th, boys volleyball played their last home game against Edison.

Last Thursday, on the fourteenth, Baron Volleyball faced off against Marina in three games. Barons won the games 27-25, 25-21, and 25-20.

On Thursday, October 22, 2009 the girls\’ volleyball team played against possibly the best volleyball team in the county, Newport Harbor.

The night ended with 3 losses. The last game kept the crowd on their toes, right up to the last second, as the score hovered at 24-24. Newport bounced back and scored another two points on the Barons, ending the night with a 24-26 loss.

Seniors Brittany Martinez and Sami Little had outstanding performances, as did freshman player Jordyn Sanchez.

The Lady Barons have a chance to redeem themselves with a home game coming up on Wednesday against Esperanza.

Tuesday night was the varsity men\’s last volleyball home game and they were up against the formidable Aztecs.

Friday\’s Senior Night recognized the team\’s seven seniors: captain and opposite hitter Dillon Emery, middle blocker Chris Gierhart, outside hitter Brian Huffman, libero Jason Tran, outside hitter Adam Lander, setter Matt McCoy, and outside hitter Ryan Sharpe.

It was all or nothing from the start. Although there were no aces and only one block (by McCoy), the Barons were able to maintain their kills, which helped them battle the Aztecs\’ strong defense. Sharpe led the way with five kills, Emery followed suit with three, and Gierhart and Lander supported the effort with two and one respectively. Unfortunately, the final score of the first match was 18-25, with the Aztecs taking the win.

Match two was filled with just as many rallies and impressive moves. The Barons hit hard and did their best, but were frequently blocked by their opponents. Emery scored five kills and many ups from the blocks he was covering for his teammates. Gierhart claimed another kill of his own along with an impressive block. Sharpe managed two more kills and a block  – both impossible for the Aztec defenders to play. However, the outcome of this match was the same as the first.

The Barons headed into match three with the Aztec’s hits going straight over the Baron blockers, making defense hard for the back row players. Hard spikes also made defense difficult. The front row did manage to score seven kills offensively, all by Emery, VanVuuren, Tompkins, and the sole block of the match by McCoy. The match ended in the Aztecs\’ favor, 16-25.

The Barons won the first match 29-27 against the Rams.  Junior Raffi Contreras-Geck, playing in for senior Matt McCoy, did wonders for the team.  Constantly running, Contreras-Geck sent everything directly to the hitters. Captain Dillon Emery (‘09) had four kills, and senior Chris Gierhart had two kills.

On Tuesday March 10^th, the Fountain Valley’s boys volleyball team took on the Huntington Beach Oilers with an overall loss.  In the first match, Senior Dillon Emery gave a great performance with 7 kills, and impressive serves were made by senior Chris Gierhart who served four in a row with one ace against the Oilers. The first match\’s final score was 25-23 with a victory for the Barons.

The second match was not as well won as the first.  The Barons battled hard against the Oilers in this close match. Junior Karl Hanxleden, senior Ryan Sharpe, and Gierhart all had blocks and kills.  However, improvement at the net and rallies from the back row players were just not enough to give the Barons the win.  The Oilers won with a 25-22 point victory, which brought the Oilers and the Barons to a tie.

Unfortunately, match three was not the best the boys have played, and the Oilers took the victory with a final score of 25-19. There were some highlights in the match for Fountain Valley, though. Senior Brian Huffman had two serves and a kill in a row against the Oilers, and Emery had six kills and Sharpe had two kills.  The Baron boys were jumping high and hitting hard, but Huntington Beach definitely caused some trouble for the Barons.

The match only went further downhill. The boys started the fourth match with a great desire to win, but started to fall apart in the end.  With the score 4-4 in the beginning, there were a few errors, and it was 14-6 the Oilers.

A time-out was called by boys head coach Todd Hansen to pick the boys up. Many substitutes and kills later, the Barons picked up their game to bring the score 19-15 HB.

Emery with 7 kills kept along with Huffman with a kill, and a block kept hope up for the Barons. Gierhart had three serves in a row with two aces bringing the score 22-20, but it still was not enough  With the game nearing a close, the Barons struggled to finish strong.  The Oilers won the fourth match 25-23, which gave Huntington Beach the overall victory.

Despite the loss, the Baron boys are determined to remain strong.

“We need to stay positive and keep our heads up,” says Varsity volleyball player Riley Fehser, junior. “We [will] have a great season!”

FVHS\’ Boys Volleyball team took on Foothill High school last Saturday, February 28th in a preseason scrimmage hosted by FVHS.  With a win in the first match followed by a loss, and ultimately an amazing comeback, FVHS had a victory 25-30 over Foothill High School.   

In the first match, senior Dillon Emery, who plays front-row opposite, had four kills and four blocks while senior Jason Tran had amazing digs against Foothill\’s intense front-row hitters. With minimal errors the Baron boys won 25-26. 

With the previous win still in their minds, the Barons went back onto the court hoping for a second match win to finish the game.  However, due to many errors, they lost 25-19. 

Tied one match to one match, it all came down to the match three. The Baron boys played intensity in the front and back rows.  Emery had six kills with much help from setter, Matt McCoy (‘09).  Sophomore Dylan Tompkins, Chris Gierhart, and Aleq Doull all had two kills.  And though they were head to head for much of the game, Foothill High School proved to be no match for our Barons, leaving the final score 25-20.
