By Camille Linares-Reed, sports editor

All of our winter sports closed with successful seasons, many of which made it to CIF.

Boys’ Soccer ended their season with a league score of 4 wins, 6 losses, and 0 ties. The first round CIF game played against Bell Gardens High School ended in a FVHS victory (2-1), with goals made by seniors Christian Rodriguez and Steven Ryan. They advanced to prelims where they played Ventura High School and lost (2-3). This game was the end to the boys’ memorable season.

Girls’ Soccer was not as fortunate as the boys’ season. The team didn’t get a chance to experience CIF this year. They ended their league season with 1 win, 7 losses, and 2 ties.

Senior Courtney Garrity and Captain of Girl’s Soccer expressed, “We played every second with passion and determination. More importantly, we played for each other as a team. I consider that a win everyday, and I’m proud of my team.”

Boys’ Basketball, usually not known for being the best in the league, pulled an excitingly unexpected league score of 4 wins, 6 losses, and 0 ties. The boys won the first round CIF game against California High school (51-30) with leading scorers being junior, Sean Myers (15 points), senior Zach Matar (8 points), and sophomore Taner Trounce (8 points). The following game played didn’t end quite as well. The boys battled Downey High and lost (33-44). This season will go down in FVHS history for being the only basketball season to ever reach the 2nd round of CIF playoffs.

Team Manager Danny Huynh comments, “The Boys ended up ranking 4th in league which was suprising. They played their hardest in CIF, and I’m proud. They leave this season with great memories, friendships, and a heightened league reputation.”

Girl’s Basketball ended their league season with 1 win (against Newport Harbor), 10 losses, and 0 ties. The girls got a chance at the first round game of CIF and played Rancho Cucamonga High School. The game ended with a loss of (74-27).

Girls’ Waterpolo ended their season with a league standing of 2 wins, 3 losses, and 0 ties. The girls won their CIF wildcard game against Esperanza (9-4) with four goals shot by senior, Marisa Young. The girls advanced to the first round but lost to Corona del Mar (6-12). This was the second consecutive year that the FVHS girls’ water polo team has been to CIF. Keep it up next year, girls!

FVHS Wrestling has always been infamous for its unstoppable wrestlers and stunning records. This year, five boys advanced to CIF, seniors Courtland Drummond and Vincent tran, juniors Dean O’Bourke and Edgar De La Torre, and sophomore Steele Escobedo. Three of the boys even went beyond CIF and made it to Masters. The talented few were Vincent Tran, Dean O’Bourke, and Steele Escobedo.

Vincent Tran comments on his last season, “I felt like we worked really hard this year. We’d push each other in practices harder than I’ve ever remembered. You have to constantly stay focused before your match. Most of the sport is mental, and we’ve really conquered that.”

All winter sports ended impressive 2010-2011 seasons. Best of luck to wrestlers Vincent, Dean, and Steele at the Masters, which is taking place Friday Jan. 25th and Saturday Jan 26th in Temecula Valley. An update will be posted by Sunday, Jan 27th.

The Lady Baron water polo players ventured to enemy territory on January 25th, only to be shot down by Newport Harbor High School with an ending score of 14-6.

It doesn’t help the Barons’ cause that Newport is ranked first in the county.

Gaining six points on Newport is a hard accomplished task. But the FV girls are none to be joked about. Junior, Marisa Young scored two goals from the center, junior Nicole Goehring scored two from the perimeter, and junior Katie Stewart scored one from 6-on-5 and one from set.
Despite the girls’ best efforts, their opponents outscored them. Junior Nicole Goehring comments, ” We wanted to win, of course, but it was a good game, and we tried out hardest.”

Previously, they won (14-1) against Esperanza, won (7-6) against Mater Dei, won (7-3) against Huntington Beach, and won (15-1) against Marina.

These Ladies are off to a great start this season.

Come to newport harbor high school on Febuary 3rd as they battle the Edison Chargers. Good Luck girls.

With the start of the winter season, comes the end of boys water polo season. A historic season in many aspects, this year\’s team gives hope to the program for years to come.

Led by Coach Eric Perales, the boys finished the season with 15 wins and 10 losses. It was their first time in the last eleven years to have a winning percentage of over 50 percent.

The Barons also won a league game for the first time in six years, beating Edison 9-5. It was also their first time winning against the Chargers in thirteen years.

Their greatest feat this season, however, was making the CIF playoffs. The last time Fountain Valley made it to CIF was before any of the current students were even born – 22 years ago.

The Barons finished the season led by their senior players. Leading scorers, Nick Ingram and Loren Tengan, scored a combined 147 of the team\’s total 279 goals. Their leadership and competitiveness pushed the Barons during the entire season – through the Sunset League and into the playoffs.

“It was definitely the most successful season we have had in a long time. But the best part was that we all had fun – the team had a great time, both in and out of the pool,” says Ingram.

The team will definitely miss all five of the seniors, but with boys off-season already in session, the rest of the team is getting right back into their morning practices. The remaining members hope for even more success next year and look forward to making it back into the playoffs.

Junior Chad Hopkins says, “I believe the future can be better than the past and I\’m ready to see how next season turns out.”

On Wednesday, October 21st, the boy’s water polo team ventured to Newport Harbor high school to play a league rival, Esperanza. The night ended with an unfortunate, but dangerously close loss.

The game was lost 14 to 10, and at one point the score was at 11 to 9, making the match extremely anticipating to watch and keeping fans on their toes.

Loren Tengan(’10) scored three goals, captain Tony Frens(’10) scored twice, Conor Bracken(’11) scored two goals, and Nick Sterrenburg(’11) scored two as well.

Although the night ended in a dissapointing loss, the Barons were proud to have such a close game.

The Boys have a tournament this Friday and Saturday. They have high hopes of dominating their competitors this weekend in Santa Ana Valley High School. Come cheer on our Boys if you get a spare moment this weekend.

Goalie Amanda Young\'s initial cut from soccer her freshman year fortuitously leads her to Olympic dreams.

By Rachel McMillen, Sports editor

The Fountain Valley\’s Lady Barons Water Polo team has been doing well this season. With a record of 20 wins and 9 losses, they made it to CIF Playoffs for the first time in five years.

And while the team has strength and speed in the field, one of their strongest points this year is goalie Amanda Young (‘09). Young has worked her way to the top and is currently the team captain and ranked the second best goalie in southern California. How she got there is a little like a modern Cinderella story though. Going into high school, Young had dreams of playing soccer. It wasn\’t until after she didn\’t make the cut at try-outs her freshman year that she thought to join the water polo team.

“I was sad (about soccer) at first, but I love water polo and I can\’t imagine my life without it right now,” Young says.

During Young\’s freshman year, the ladies\’ water polo team was in need of a JV goalie. Although Young had had no prior goalkeeping or water polo experience, she had strong legs and the position came to her easily. By the time the team\’s varsity goalie graduated that year, Young had exceeded everyone\’s expectations, and Young has been Varsity\’s starting goalie ever since.

With over 250 saves just this season, Young has stunned everyone by shattering the water polo goalkeeping records, the record for total saves in a season; and the record for total saves in a career. Despite all these broken records, Young continues to maintain a down to earth personality and credits her success to the support from her teammates, including her younger sister, Marisa Young (‘11) who is the Lady Baron\’s top scorer this year.

“I work really hard, but a big part of my success is the environment,” Amanda Young says. “Everyone is really nice and plays an important role on the team.”

Due to her outstanding success in high school, Young has already signed to play with Arizona State University\’s water polo team next fall. Already at the level of their current goalie, she has a good chance at becoming the Sun Devil\’s starting goalie next school year. There are few college scholarships available for women water polo players, so being awarded one is an honor.

Young hopes ASU will only be just another stop on her road to success. Her ultimate goal is to play in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and from the looks of it, this Baron is well on her way.

During homecoming week when many students and staff were preparing for the big dance, the varsity boys\’ water polo team had other plans. They traveled to the bay area for the first time to compete in a water polo tournament.

The guys left Thursday afternoon and came back Saturday night. Though the boys usually go to San Diego as an annual trip, head coach Sean Elo decided to switch it up a bit, and took the guys to compete with the northern teams.

During the tournament, the boys played five games and won one. Elo says, “The guys up north play differently compared to the guys down here. They play very physically up north. Our team could have done better.”

Though some of the guys were disappointed about missing homecoming, they still had a lot of fun. The guys visited Fisherman\’s Wharf, Ripley\’s Believe it or Not, and UC Berkeley.

“San Francisco is the guys\’ type of city,” Elo says. “This was a good bonding experience and we all learned much more about each other. Hopefully this will become an annual trip for the boys.”

Long Beach Poly, Millikan, and Woodbridge were among many of the high schools defeated in the summer games. All the time in and out of the water created a strong sense of teamwork.

“Being with the same people for so long creates a bond between the teammates. After a while, the team just kind of forms a tight-knit family, so we support each other through thick and thin,” says recent 2008 alumnus, Kaileigh Esson.

Contrary to what some might think, the water polo girls do have a life beyond the water.

The team also had the chance to go on a trip to Hawaii this summer to vacation and practice.

The dangerously high chlorine levels, which caused concern last year, have supposedly gotten better, and the players\’ hair was not bleached by the second week of practice.

The water polo girls hope that after all their hard work over the summer they will have a successful year when their season starts in October.
